XML Formatter

Check XML syntax and format a local document.

How to use XML Formatter

  1. Paste XML or choose an .xml file. Check that the document has correctly nested tags and quoted attributes.
  2. Choose two-space or four-space indentation, then select Validate and format XML.
  3. Review the formatted output and any syntax error, then copy it or download formatted.xml. Mixed text and xml:space="preserve" content stays together.

What this tool does

External entities are not fetched; complex mixed content needs review.

Example

Format <order id="7"><item>Book</item></order> to make the nested item easier to read while retaining the id attribute and text.

Frequently asked questions

Does this check an XML schema?

No. It checks whether the XML can be parsed as well-formed markup; it does not validate against an XSD or DTD schema.

Are DTDs or external entities loaded?

No. Documents containing DTD or entity declarations are rejected, and no external entity is fetched.
